Longevity is one of the most discussed topics in the fragrance community — and one of the most misunderstood. Here is what actually works, from the team at Maison Nikoui.
1. Apply to moisturised skin
Fragrance molecules bind to oils. Dry skin has less to hold onto, which means the top notes evaporate quickly and the base notes never fully develop. Apply an unscented moisturiser to pulse points before you spray, and your fragrance will last significantly longer and smell different — rounder, more developed, more like the fragrance was intended.
2. Target pulse points — but not all of them
Pulse points (wrists, neck, behind the ears, inside the elbows) are warm, which helps diffuse the fragrance. But spraying every pulse point simultaneously creates an overwhelming initial cloud that fades quickly. Choose two or three: typically the neck and one wrist are enough for most occasions.
3. Do not rub your wrists together
Rubbing generates heat and friction that breaks down the top notes before they have a chance to develop. Spray one wrist and leave it. If you must apply with your wrist, pat gently rather than rubbing.
4. Layer with an unscented hair mist
Hair holds fragrance longer than skin — the surface area is greater and hair oils bind fragrance molecules effectively. Spray a small amount into the air and walk through it, letting it settle on your hair rather than spraying directly onto hair (which can dry it out over time).
5. Store correctly
Heat, light, and air are fragrance's enemies. Store your bottles away from windows and radiators — ideally in a dark, cool cupboard or drawer. Fluctuating temperatures cause the molecular structure of a fragrance to break down, reducing longevity and changing the scent profile over time.
6. Know your concentration
All Maison Nikoui fragrances are formulated at 20% Eau de Parfum concentration — at the upper limit of the EDP range. This means less is more: two sprays on the neck is sufficient for most occasions. Over-applying a high-concentration EDP does not extend longevity — it creates an initial blast that fades at the same rate as a lighter application.
7. Try the fragrance in different seasons
Temperature and humidity significantly affect how a fragrance wears. Warm, humid conditions amplify projection — fragrances that feel subtle in winter can become overwhelming in summer. Conversely, dry cold air can mute base notes. The best way to understand how a fragrance performs for you is to wear it across different conditions, which is why Maison Nikoui's 2ml samples are designed for exactly this kind of exploration.
